The history of mermaids is an interesting one, here’s a little background info you can impress your friends, with: SO, apparently (and I’m going off of internet searching so feel free to fact check me in the comments) mermaids are suuuuper old. They came from Assyrian mythology, but like a lot of other folklore, they are found in a wide array of different cultures. The sirens of Greek mythology likely inspired the West’s fascination with mermaids. Colombus (even though we don’t like him for obv reasons) even wrote about mermaids in his journals though it was prob just a manatee or dolphin.
