Why So Blue
Blue is the most boring color, don’t hate me, you know it’s true.
Incase you haven’t noticed I feature a new color each month here at color me courtney – and for July I took on my most challenging color yet: blue. I know what you’re thinking, blue is easy and yes, maybe this is true for you, but blue is also sooo very boring at least In my opinion which brings on all new sorts of challenges for me. As s result I did #colormemonthblue a little differently than all the other color months so I’m spilling the T today and doing a little blue recap post for you cuties RIGHT NOW – here we go!
IT’S TRUE I HATE BLUE – Okay, hate is a strong word, but I tend to gravitate towards warm colors: reds, pinks, yellows, orange (which was the color of the month for June and one of my all time favorite colors of the month) and blue is just kind of basic (shrug). I dont like it. I think its boring. I think its bland … And I think in terms of color, I can do better than that! When I think blue, I consider it a super safe color that almost everyone feels comfortable wearing and thats kind of the opposite of this blog. I try to push people out of their color comfort zones, so how can I do that with a boring color? AND does that make me a hypocrite when I’m scared to wear a color that makes everyone else comfortable? I’m not sure? Maybe? With all these questions (and a little push from my color me clique aka my story fam) I rose to the challenge and took on all whole new hue for July.
But I kept a secret . Did you know Blue was the color of the month? No, probably not because I didn’t really tell you. I kept it a secret and toned down my normally loud and warm tones to cool blue to see if you guys noticed the switch. Why? Because I wanted to gauge your reactions. Some instagram experts claim that blue posts on instagram tend to perform better, so I wanted to put this to the test. I wondered if wearing and featuring more blue would increase my engagement as they claimed but the only way I felt I could actually test this, was to not tell you (I’ll share the answer in tomorrow’s blog post).
I also didn’t share because I didn’t know how I would do with blue, and if I was going to flop, I wanted to flop privately and tell you about it later instead of flop publicly and get judged. Again, I know, this is just color and it’s not life or death, but for me color is the life of this blog and my brand so yeahhhh it matters. I dont claim to be an expert on much but I am a color pro. I know what colors work and I run straight into colors that almost everyone fears. I’m bold and unapologetic with the way I dress and my use of hues, and I’m proud of all that fact so I take any color sharing tips or tricks very seriously and really wanted to explore my relationship with blue before I shared it with you.

The best way to brighten up blue? by saying hello to yellow! Yellow and blue work reaalllllly well together because they’re both primary colors and sit across from each other on the color wheel. In fact, I would be as bold to say that they might be one of the best color combos of all time, not my personal favorite color combo, but one of the best matches of them all so I had to give it a go for #colormemonthblue. I kind of got around committing to an all blue look by wearing mostly yellow with POPS of blue. Plus this bright / baby blue mansur bag was one thing I bought this month to get me excited about #colormemonthblue// SHOP
I love a good jump suit, but when you’re 5 foot with a small waist, big butt and D cup finding one that fits like a dream is almost impossible, so I fake it! Here I’m wearing two matching pieces to create the illusion of a jumpsuit in royal blue stripes. I opted for a loud and graphic print to bring new life into this blue hue and paired it with Orange to keep it sunny and fun! // SHOP:
This top was my Blue BFF this month! I love that its a cool baby blue color, but a bold and unique style. I think the dramatic silhouette brightens up any look, even if the color is more on the muted (for me) side. I own this top in pink and polka dot too, plus it was one of the few pieces I didn’t buy specifically for the blue month because I already owned it! I paired it with a stripe dress (last seen here) that I hacked into a skirt by tucking the top in // SHOP:
Blue/Green goes really well with pink too, I wore that same top again with pops of pink and stripes for weekend chic. These pants are some of my favorites (and Paris’s too) if you follow me on Instagram you might remember all the peach pictures he took this day. // SHOP
I wore this forth of July weekend which was a great way to kick of my month of blue because I got to dress in theme. I love any excuse to wear something specific: orange for halloween, pink and red for valentines and red white and blue for July 4th! Instead of going with classic navy or real royal blue, I opted for baby paired with a bright coral red/orange for something slightly unexpected. Thats my favorite way to refresh a color combo, switch up the shade. Try green and red with red orange and kelly or cherry red and lime or try blue and yellow with egg yolk & baby blue! // SHOP:

OKAY so I did always cop out – sometimes I dared to go full on blue, especially when it meant I could match with P. Here we are twinning and winning in the coolest color of all, I did pop mine up with a bit of red in the lips & bag department but otherwise I’m blue, if I was green I would die! // SHOP:

If I’m being honest, I still kind of ran from blue this month. I wore every single shade of bright blue I could and stayed as far away from the more neutral ones that I consider kind of bland: like navy or anything kind of dull and muted. Even tho I’m not sure I’m a big fan of blue now, I did learn a lot about myself and my style from this challenge, and even learned to seriously like some shades.
Taking on blue was kind of out of my comfort zone and a bit challenging, which made me wonder why was it so scary for me to take on a color almost everyone loves? Why was I so annoyed with having to conquer this color? Well it lead to a little but if an unintended emotional deep dive and some random self realization that I’ll chat more about in tomorrows post but for today I wanted to recap all of my blue looks and explain why I did this month a little bit backwards today + ask you to forgive me for keeping my saturated little secret. FORGIVE ME!
Tune in TOMORROW where I share 5 things I learned about wearing blue for a month and again the next day when I announce the new color for August.
P.S. if you came from instagram, sorry about the sneaky caption lol! I hope you weren’t too disappointed with the secret, but even if you are I’m glad you came to the blog!
P.P.S From now on I’ll be posting DAILY on colormecourtney.com so tune in every morning at or anytime after 7AM EST to see a new post, weeee.
